NHS 2020 Leadership Programme

The Challenge
North East Hampshire & Farnham Clinical Commissioning Group was looking to meet the dual challenge of streamlining services whilst improving patient care in line with the new NHS Five Year Forward View.

CoCreate was selected to develop a totally new kind of leadership programme for the NHS – one that is cross-organisational, cross-hierarchical and genuinely inclusive.

The Programme
The NHS 2020 Leadership programme brings together clinicians and managers from all across the system for a 12 month programme to promote collaboration and improve patient outcomes.

CoCreate deployed a network analysis tool to understand the barriers to collaboration across NHS personnel. We used insight from surveys to create the safety for people to develop meaningful relationships and agree on the need for collective action.

The next stage of development was to help NHS staff to step back from and understand the complex system in which they work, and to diagnose some of the common challenges they all face.

We then integrated core leadership skills - including coaching, influencing, listening and mindfulness - to help programme participants identify and develop system change initiatives which they are now piloting across the NHS.

The pilot has been hugely successful. The change initiatives are already beginning to deliver measurable impact and other areas of the NHS are requesting their own 2020 programme.

"I am both grateful and privileged to have been selected for the 2020 programme. You have created a positive energy and a space of empowerment that has galvanised a group of people to come together and collaborate, creating an energy from within and a belief system that can transform health care. It’s been exhilarating, empowering, thought provoking and fun. I believe we’ve created a movement with the 2020 programme, and I have been personally transformed as a leader."
