Trainline Exec Development

Challenge

Trainline is one of the largest and most successful UK Tech firms. CoCreate was engaged at a pivotal time in their development as a business to design and deliver several interventions that built trust and created alignment across the Executive team.

Programme

We started by conducting 1:1 discussions with each member of the Exec Team, which revealed the need to build psychological safety and to increase alignment on the vision.

To accelerate trust and create alignment, we designed a tailored two-day journey that included hiking, kayaking, ghyll scrambling, staying overnight in a mountain hut, cooking a meal together – all carefully designed to break down barriers and create a space for open and honest conversations.

As the team arrived on the shores of Lake Coniston in the English Lake District, we explored Patrick Lencioni’s ‘Five Dysfunctions of a Team’, with team members identifying the areas that needed focus. After kayaking across Lake Coniston the CoCreate team played back our reflections from 1:1 conversations, enabling the team to align on the priority discussions to be had.

A guided hike enabled the team to deepen trust through a series of purposeful 1:1 discussions, whilst a night on the Old Man of Coniston in a mountain hut cooking a meal together generated plenty of camaraderie.

Over drinks by the fire we supported the team to define a vision of future success, and to lean into sharing feedback and appreciation for what each person brought to delivering this vision. The next day the team undertook a ghyll scramble in freezing winter conditions, requiring them to dig deep and support one another.

Impact

The result was a powerful shared experience that created stronger personal connections, reinforcing a clear sense of purpose for the team, and establishing new ways of working that fueled the team’s performance. CoCreate continued to provide development interventions for this team, including; an inspiring workshop with Olympic Gold Medallist Kate Richardson Walsh, a  360 for each leader supported by peer coaching and candid exploration of strengths and personal derailers, a workshop to refine new company values and leadership behaviours, and another two-day journey through the South Downs.

In my 20 years of working, this is the standout best event I have ever done with a team. You have definitely helped us go a level deeper in understanding ourselves and each other. I think this will prove to be a pivotal moment for us. That’s a lot to achieve in just two days!
