It feels like every organisation today is talking about psychological safety, but what actually is it? Why does it matter? And how does it impact performance?
I’m Andy Caldwell, founder and partner at CoCreate Consultancy. We’ve been working with organisations around the world to build more psychological safety.
In this webinar, I’m going to help demystify what psychological safety really is. I’ll share a simple, practical framework – co-developed and tested with one of the world’s leading management consultancies – that will enable you to identify how to build more of it. And as a leader, I’m going to equip you with some quick wins that will help you build more psychological safety in order to drive performance.

Why psychological safety matters

If you’re wondering why psychological safety matters, just think about what happens when it’s missing.
When psychological safety is lacking, people start to ask themselves:
- If I speak up,
- If I share an idea in a meeting,
- If I challenge someone more senior than me,
- If I ask for help,
- If I admit to making a mistake
- If I share that I am feeling overwhelmed…
Will that behaviour be held against me?
If the answer is yes, the simplest way to protect themselves is not to speak up, not to share ideas, not to challenge, not to ask for help, and not to admit mistakes.
And where does that lead? You guessed it… low-performing teams.
Google spent some time looking into what makes a high-performing team. Was it the number of people? The balance of introverts and extroverts? Or maybe, how often that team socialises together? Not quite. Google discovered that the number one factor affecting the performance of its teams was simply the level of psychological safety.
Given psychological safety’s proven impact on team performance, organisations really can’t afford to overlook it.
